Sinusitis and my first interaction with Essential Oils

This happened many years ago and was something that persisted for several years. I had a problem breathing. My nose seemed to always be blocked making it hard for air to go in or out. I started using nasal sprays, to the point that I HAD to have them. We all know that you are not supposed to use them for very many days and you are not supposed to use them more than 2-4 times a day, depending on the strength you purchased. If you do, it begins a vicious cycle of causing inflammation in your nasal passages and causing the blockage to get worse. Then, if you stop the nasal spray, your passages will entirely close up making breathing impossible.

I had got to the point that I was spraying 3, 4, even 5 time a day or more and had been using the spray for around 7 years straight like that. I knew something had to change but didn’t know how or what.

Somewhere along the line, I signed up for a degree course in natural health. In this course, there were covered several modalities such as herbs, healing touch, food and so on. One of the things covered was essential oils. It was teaching me about my nasal passages and what my problem was. Up to this point, I didn’t know it had a name. Here it was, Sinusitis. It talked about using an oil called eucalyptus, how it was anti bacterial and so on. I decided to give it a try. I went out and bought a bottle of the oil, came home and put some water in a pan. When the water started to boil, I took it off the stove and set it on the dining room table. I sat in front of the pan of water, put in 2-3 drops of the oil and placed my head (covered with a bath towel) over the mist and began to slowly breathe it in. At first, it was hard to do. The strength of the oil made me choke up a bit and my passages weren’t open very much. After a few inhalations, though, my passages began to open up and I was able to breathe deeply. I stayed there for about 5 minutes, until the water vapors were gone and the oil was used up.

I did this same thing once or twice a day for the next several days, afraid my passages would close up again. To my surprise, they never did close up again. Here I am today, 20+ years later and I have not had any problems with breathing since then. In the winter when a lot of dirt and dust is in the air, if I feel my nose trying to get blocked, I get some of the oil and boil some water. After a treatment or two, I am good to go for the rest of the year.

What would the doctor suggest? I can’t say as I’ve never asked them. I can imagine though, medicine, surgery or whatever. Why would anyone want to do that when a couple drops of a pure plant oil will solve the problem for them? Winter is coming fast. Get your Eucalyptus oil now, before you need it. If you want a truly superb quality oil, drop me a line. I have a fantastic Eucalyptus oil and it isn’t an arm and a leg. Ask me about other oils that are beneficial during the winter months as well.

  1. I am interested in the natural health course that you took. I’d like to undergo one as well, but I can only do it online. I’m also just learning about aromatherapy. Glad your sinusitis cleared up 🙂

    1. Unfortunately, the course I took and the school that offered it closed a couple years ago. There are some other schools that offer similar courses though and many of them are online. I would just do a search for natural health courses and see what turns up.
